Dodie Logue Biography

Dodie Logue

Dodie Logue is a painter based in rural Minnesota where she has a studio in an old dairy
barn. She received her BA from the University of Minnesota, and her MFA from Bard
College. Dodie’s work has been exhibited locally and nationally, and she has received
grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Central Minnesota Arts Board, as
well as a residency from the Ucross Foundation. The Minnesota Museum of American
Art and the Vision Northland Hospital recently acquired artworks of hers for their
permanent collections. Some time each winter will find her in the desert southwest.

Mary Logue

New York Times-bestselling author Mary Logue has published over thirty books,
including mystery novels, poetry, non-fiction books, and many books for children. Her
latest book, The Big Sugar, was chosen by the New York Times for their summer reading
list in 2023. Her awards include a Minnesota Book Award, a Wisconsin Outstanding
Achievement award and an Edgar nomination. Mary has also worked as an editor and
taught in the graduate writing programs at the University of Minnesota and Hamline
University.

They published the book Trees, a series of charcoal drawings by Dodie and
accompanying poems by Mary, in 2020.

Ekphrastic Poetry
Ekphrastic poetry originally meant a piece that “described in vivid detail,” a painting or
work of art. But it has come to mean, more loosely, a poem that is inspired by a painting.
When dealing with abstract work, the poem itself should be rather oblique, trying to
capture the sense and mood of a painting rather than being just a description.

Dodie Logue Description

Dodie Logue is a painter based in Delano, MN, where she has a studio in an old Dairy barn. She received a BA from the University of Minnesota, and an MFA at Bard College. She spends some time each winter in the desert southwest.

Recently she has been focusing on "Healing Arts Exhibitions" at hospitals, including at Owatonna Hospital in 2021 and two-person installations with her sister Mary at Westfields and Hudson Hospitals in Wisconsin. She has shown her work nationally and currently exhibits in Minnesota and New Mexico. In 2014 one of her works was selected for purchase by the Minnesota Museum of American Art during the Minnesota Biennial Exhibition. In 2013 she and her sister published a book “TREES” which included her drawings and her sister Mary Logue’s poems.

In 2022 and 2021 Logue received Creative Support Grants for Individual artists from the MN State Arts Board, and in 2020 an Artist Learning Grant from the Central MN Arts Board. In 2022 she retired from her freelance work as a guide for a nature travel company, to focus full time on her art.

Dodie Logue Statement

I use strong color and abstract patterns that originate from my daily life - from nature or textiles and crafts or weather -  anything I encounter may inform my paintings.

The concept of Yin and Yang—that all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites—helps me make sense of the disarray and energy of our world.  By bringing this idea to my work, I simplify and use opposing forces to construct my pieces: chaos/order, stillness/action, complexity/simplicity. There is energy in moving between these often contradictory forces and I try to capture it in my work.

My materials are traditional, oil or acrylic paint on canvas. With these I try to straddle control and spontaneity, using a variety of techniques like painting with a huge brush, or left-handed, or pouring the paint, or sitting on the floor so I can’t see the whole piece. This is to break my hold of control and give room for irregularities and mistakes to occur, adding ambiguity and freshness to the work. I hope there is some humor and joy in my paintings.
